NIR spectroscopy: How does it work?

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a method that uses the interaction between light in the near-infrared (NIR) region of the electromagnetic spectrum (780 to 2500 nm) and matter to identify samples and to quantify various quality parameters. This interaction between light and matter is inducing specific molecule vibrations similar to the interaction analyzed with mid-infrared spectroscopy (mostly FT-IR). For the analysis of the interaction two main types of analyzers are most prominent in the market: Fourier Transform based (FT-NIR) and dispersive NIR (scanning) spectrometers. The advantage of dispersive spectrometers using a holographic grating is that they are able to use the visible (Vis) as well as the near-infrared (NIR) light to analyze the samples increasing the possible application possibilities.

Further signal-to-noise and therefore the potential to measure lower concentration is enhanced with dispersive systems over FT System using near-infrared light. Using NIR spectroscopy for quality control allows for simultaneous qualitative (identification and qualification) and quantitative analysis of a number of parameters in one run.

What are typical applications?

Applications with near-infrared spectroscopy covers both quality control and quality assurance processes and can be used for the determination of chemical as well as physical parameters., e.g. viscosity, density, flash point, cloud point, RON, MON, Moisture, Hydroxyl Number, TAN, TBN, aromatic content, and many more.

Why use NIR spectroscopy over wet-chemical methods?

NIRS does not require any sample preparation. Therefore, potentially toxic solvents and reagents are not used. Thus, it is a green, environmentally friendly, and sustainable technique. Further, this makes the operation with NIRS very easy and in fact, it can even be done by non-specialists such a shift workers. User familiarization is fast and staff training can be reduced to a minimum.

NIRS is non-destructive, meaning that the samples are not destroyed or tampered with chemically during analysis and can thus be reused.
NIRS is very fast such as a measurement takes typically around 30seconds. However, accurate and precise results are within the limits of the used primary technology. NIRS can analyze multiple parameters within one scan. This  further decreases the time to result since multiple analysis can be covered by just one NIR measurement. Because of the previously mentioned advantages, users experience significant cost savings and time savings when using the secondary method NIRS instead of the primary method such as a wet chemical technique. Therefore, break-even point is generally reached quickly and the return-on-investment calculations (ROI) show a very positive outcome.
